Through My Lens: What Santa Taught Me

Arlington photographer; Remember the moments

As a photographer, I’ve learned that the most powerful images aren’t just about light, angles, or composition—they’re about capturing a feeling. A few years ago, I was reminded of this truth during a family shoot that featured a very special guest: Santa Claus himself.

The kids had been learning from home, with only a few chances to go anywhere. But that day in the park, everything changed. Long before they saw him, they heard him—the faint jingle of a bell getting closer. Their faces lit up. The anticipation built. And when Santa appeared, dressed in his plush red suit and fur-lined boots, magic filled the air.

Capturing Presence

Santa didn’t rush. He sat on the edge of a wooden bridge, letting each child climb up beside him. One by one, they leaned in to whisper their wishes. My camera caught wide eyes, soft smiles, and the kind of wonder adults often forget. Santa listened carefully, responding with surprise, laughter, and a twinkle that seemed more real than make-believe.

The Beauty in Small Details

At one point, I noticed the youngest boy at Santa’s feet. Instead of rushing forward to ask for toys, he was mesmerized by the antique bells on Santa’s boots. He reached out, playing with the jingling charm as though it held the whole spirit of Christmas inside it. My shutter clicked at just the right second—freezing pure innocence and awe in a single frame.

A Walk to Remember

Later, as the group wandered through the park, I trailed behind with my camera. Santa held the boy’s small hand in his, their footsteps falling into rhythm. The child looked up, eyes fixed on the long white beard and that familiar ho, ho, ho. I pressed the shutter again, knowing this was more than a photo. It was a memory, a story, a lesson. A moment I would remember forever.

What Santa Taught Me

Watching through my lens, I realized Santa had more to teach in life than how to spread holiday cheer. He showed me the power of slowing down, of listening fully, of letting small joys capture our attention. And most of all, he reminded me that laughter—big, hearty, belly laughter—has the power to dissolve the weight of the world, even if just for a little while.

That day, I didn’t just photograph Santa. I photographed presence. I photographed joy. I photographed the reminder that maybe, just maybe, life could be simpler if we all carried a little “Santa point of view.”

Because sometimes, what we really need is to pause, smile, and let out our own ho, ho, ho.
